2103 Milestones: Run The Connector 5K

On Saturday, December 28, 2013,  the Florida Department of Transportation and the Tampa Port Authority came together to hold the commemorative “Run the Connector 5K” to celebrate the approaching opening of the I-4/Selmon Expressway Connector project in Tampa.  FDOT Secretary Ananth Prasad spoke to the over 1,000 runners and volunteers in attendance before heading over to the start of the race to take part in the official ribbon-cutting ceremony. The 5K run took place on a portion of the new, elevated roadway, allowing the participating public a one-time opportunity to see Tampa from a unique perspective as they ran from the ceremony site to Interstate 4 and back.

The Tampa I‐4/Selmon Expressway Connector project is a series of new north‐south toll ramps to and from Interstate 4, the Selmon Expressway and 20th St. The ramps connect Interstate 4 with the Selmon Expressway west of 31st Street in Tampa and provide truck ramps connecting the Port of Tampa area with I-4. The project, which opened for traffic on January 6, will provide a vital link between these two major east‐west corridors and significantly improve the movement of people and goods.
