On Sunday, March 22, FDOT’s Alert Today Florida team and District Seven partnered with the Tampa Bay Lightning of the National Hockey League to promote the statewide “Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow” safety campaign. Volunteers were set up inside and outside the arena distributing safety information, promo packs, and raffling off two autographed Tampa Bay Lightning hockey pucks.
During the second intermission of the game, three lucky fans participated in a tricycle race on the ice in front of a sold-out Amalie Arena, with the winner receiving a brand new bicycle presented by Secretary Steinman. The light-hearted race helped educate fans about bicycle and pedestrian safety and drew a big reaction from the packed crowd. Just in case you were wondering, the Lightning went on to crush the rival Boston Bruins, 5-3.
Bicycle and pedestrian safety is the department’s focused initiative in driving down fatalities on Florida’s roadways. Thousands were in attendance and heard the safety messages and public service announcements. Go Bolts!
