Alert Today Florida is a Florida Department of Transportation initiative that is centered on using a unified, comprehensive approach to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety through leadership, innovation and program delivery. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the FDOT are committed to continuing grassroots efforts and spreading their message throughout the community, beginning with their partnership for the 2015 season.
On Wednesday, September 9th, the Florida Department of Transportation and Alert Today Florida teamed up with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to help promote pedestrian and bicycle safety across the greater Tampa Bay area. The partnership kicked-off with an event at Mort Elementary in Tampa, where a 30 minute safety address to the students was followed by a backpack handout by Buccaneer cheerleaders and their always formidable mascot, Captain Fear. State Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Program Manager, Trenda McPherson, who was instrumental in securing the partnership, was also on hand to speak on the importance of safety and staying alert while biking and walking to and from school.
To celebrate the beginning of the newly formed partnership, Alert Today Florida donated more than 11,000 backpacks towards the Buccaneers Academy Backpack Caravan. Throughout the day, the 24 Buccaneers Academy schools in Hillsborough County were visited by representatives from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who delivered much-needed backpacks to students at each of the Buccaneers Academies around the Bay Area.
“Whether you walk, bike or drive, it is our mission to help you get to your destination safely,” said FDOT Secretary Jim Boxold. “I want to thank the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for their partnership with Alert Today Florida. This gives us another opportunity to emphasize the value of pedestrian and bicycle safety, because Every Life Counts.”
“We are thrilled to welcome the Florida Department of Transportation’s Alert Today Florida program as our newest partner,” said Buccaneers Chief Operating Officer Brian Ford. “We look forward to working with Alert Today Florida to increase awareness and promote pedestrian and bicycle safety to Bucs fans through gameday activation and community efforts such as the Buccaneers Academy Backpack Caravan.”
On October 7, representatives from Alert Today Florida and FDOT teamed up with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chick-fil-A and local officials at Mort, Curlew Creek and Deer Park elementary schools in Hillsborough County for a “Walk on Wednesday,” in honor of International Walk to School Day. The Bucs mascot, Captain Fear, was on hand to help direct traffic for students at Mort Elementary in Tampa
On Tuesday, December 22, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ defensive line teamed up with Alert Today Florida and Buccaneers staff members to surprise 40 families battling tough times this holiday season as part of the D-Line Delivers Christmas event.
